Colloquium - Religion in the Public SquareThe last few years have seen a number of legislative reforms and policy developments on both a State and Federal level that have caused concern amongst some Christian and religious circles. The issues include Victoria’s Religious and Racial Vilification Act, Medical Treatment (Physician Assisted Dying) Bill, same sex access to reproductive treatment, Marriage Act amendments, Equal Opportunity Act review, Human Rights Consultation, to name a few. These reforms and developments, whilst being issues in their own right, in turn raise a number of secondary issues that warrant consideration. One such issue is the emerging trend that is becoming increasingly pronounced as Christians seek to engage with these reforms and developments. This trend indicates a concerted and relentless attempt to stifle, marginalise and trivialise (and even vilify) not only the Christian voice but Christian expression, participation, wisdom etc in public discourse, policy and life. Experiences of Christians in other parts of the world, particularly Great Britain, suggest that the trend has only just begun and has much of its life left to live and impact to leave. Hence the Colloquium- Religion in the Public Square. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Business Network BreakfastThe Prison Fellowship of Victoria Business Network Breakfast was held on Wednesday, 8 April at the offices of Khor & Burr (level 13, 50 Market St, Melbourne) from 7:15–8:30am. The Guest Speaker was Lindsay White, who is the head of the Prison Fellowship Council and a former Director of Costa Group.
Review of the Equal Opportunity Act 1995The Department of Justice is reviewing the exceptions and exemptions to the Equal Opportunity Act 1995, which provide a number of freedoms for church and faith-based organisations. The government has referred this issue to the Scrutiny of Acts & Regulations Committee of the Parliament which is to report back by 30 April. The CLS is concerned that the freedoms that are currently enjoyed may be limited or removed, and so we are writing to you to encourage you to make a submission to the Equal Opportunity Review Team. Details of how to do so, along with further information and a submission made by the Australian Christian Lobby, are contained in the links below: http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/sarc/EOA_exempt_except/default.htm http://www.acl.org.au/pdfs/load_pdf_public.pdf?pdf_id=1090&from=national

Medical Treatment (Physician Assisted Dying) Bill 2008Dear CLS members, You may be aware that the Medical Treatment (Physician Assisted Dying) Bill 2008 is scheduled for debate in the Upper House of the Victorian legislature on 30 July 2008. The issue of assisted dying is important, and the CLS is uniquely positioned in the legal community to provide a Christian response to the legal and ethical issues that it raises. The CLS committee encourages you to participate and to have your voice heard regarding this proposed legislation. You are invited to: 1) Let the committee know of your interest in joining a working party / steering group set up to explore the issues and provide a cohesive response. (Please email Alex Smith at as@joneskoller.com.au) 2) Draft a discussion paper for the CLS that responds to the Bill, which the CLS may then use and collate and submit to the legislature for further consideration. Papers are invited to be received by 15 July 2008, in order that we can collate responses and tender them to the appropriate channels. We hope that you will consider getting involved. CLS Committee
