Medical Treatment (Physician Assisted Dying) Bill 2008Dear CLS members, You may be aware that the Medical Treatment (Physician Assisted Dying) Bill 2008 is scheduled for debate in the Upper House of the Victorian legislature on 30 July 2008. The issue of assisted dying is important, and the CLS is uniquely positioned in the legal community to provide a Christian response to the legal and ethical issues that it raises. The CLS committee encourages you to participate and to have your voice heard regarding this proposed legislation. You are invited to: 1) Let the committee know of your interest in joining a working party / steering group set up to explore the issues and provide a cohesive response. (Please email Alex Smith at as@joneskoller.com.au) 2) Draft a discussion paper for the CLS that responds to the Bill, which the CLS may then use and collate and submit to the legislature for further consideration. Papers are invited to be received by 15 July 2008, in order that we can collate responses and tender them to the appropriate channels. We hope that you will consider getting involved. CLS Committee

CLS Faith @ Work ConsultantThe CLS Executive Committee are very pleased to announce the appointment of Benny Tabalujan as the CLS Faith @ Work Consultant as part of a new pilot project. Benny's new role aims to support the CLS in our work in various ways and will include meeting with members on a one to one or small group basis, attending events and supporting CLS students at university. As the role involves meeting with and contacting CLS members in order to support you, pray for you and others and encourage you, please advise us if you do not wish to be contacted by Benny. One new thing you will see is some emails to members on the CLS email list from Benny as a regular encouragement. Please provide any comments you have to us as we embark on this new idea. Profile: Benny has degrees in economics and law from Monash University and an LLM and PhD from University of Melbourne. His previous roles include practising as a lawyer in Australia and Hong Kong before becoming a tenured associate professor in business law at the Nanyang Business School in Singapore.
